[Paraview] Particles, 3d shapes and a speed issue

Hi all,

When displaying a rectilinear grid of particles, I end up seeing just
square blobs for each particle, and am unable to get proper spheres with
shading and lighting. I do choose the relevant options from the menu on
the left, including Goraud shading. But to no avail.

Is there a specific option which needs to be set for this, or do I have
something wrong with my rendering options/graphics drivers (maybe
paraview's using software rendering instead of hardware)?

In fact, this is another problem I've been facing - paraview runs on a
pretty powerful cluster, and I see results through SSH with X
forwarding. Since this is a local network, the lag shouldn't be too much
- yet, when rotating complex particle systems, I get very sluggish
performance. I attributed to this being a drivers issue - but might
there be other things which I'm not taking into account here?

Thanks,
Viksit
