I wasn't able to reproduce this issue on my 64 bit machine with 64 GB of memory running PV 5.1. I tried creating a wavelet with extents (0, 1000, 0, 500, 0, 100), then used the clip filter to convert all of the cells to hexes in an unstructured grid and wrote that out to a vtu file with both appended and binary data mode options. I was able to read both of these files into PV 5.1 properly.

I'm closing this issue as fixed but if you still have this issue with PV 5.1., please give us more specific details on how to reproduce this issue.
